Weather Station
We run a Davis Vantage Pro 2
weather station on our rooftop. The outdoor sensors wirelessly transmit data to our indoor display unit.
The data is then sent via USB cable to a computer for processing.
All outdoor sensors are mounted at the top of our chimney. We have never used our fireplace, so no
heat contamination occurs. However, the temperature sensors are above the standard 2 meter height.
This can lead to warmer overnight low temperatures than would be measured closer to the ground. Also,
we have noticed that our wind speed measurements are often about 10% too low. This may be caused by
friction and obstacle flow around the house.

Weather Station Software
This station runs WView weather data archiving software on
a linux PC. The program continuously monitors and archives data from the station, as well as uploading
observations to our web server. We do not use WView to draw any of our web graphics.
All web graphics are produced using software I wrote myself. This code is written in C, and uses the GD
graphics library for drawing. This also includes the routines to display current weather data on the
camera images.

Web Camera
Our web camera is a StarDot NetCam SC SD130B.
This 1.3MP camera is perfectly designed for weather cam use, due to its ability to work at very high and
low temperatures. It is mounted in a StarDot outdoor housing for safety from the elements.
The camera runs via power-over-internet (POE) and contains its own web server. The server is configured to
FTP the latest image to our web server every minute. I then have a program on the server that also runs
every minute to overlay weather data on the image, and archive the image for looping.
Below is a reference map for the web camera. The only visibility marker that is clearly evident is the
AT&T transmission tower that lies 2.05 miles WNW of the cam.

NWS weather data and imagery
All of the weather imagery loops and text products shown on this site are produced by
National Weather Service, and
compiled/uploaded by my linux server. We run a fully functional NOAAPORT satellite reception system that
processes many gigabytes of weather information every day. I have selected a few key products to display
on this site.
